Conflict is an unavoidable part of our daily lives. As adults we ve hopefully learned to deal with conflict better than we did as children. Students have very little understanding of how to deal with conflict whether it s between themselves and others or just within themselves. Helping them realize that their conflicts are shared by everyone else can lessen the stress caused by these conflicts. There are 3 major types of conflicts that all of us confront. These are internal conflicts. They are known as: Approach- Avoidance Conflict Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict Approach-Approach Conflict (A fourth type of conflict is called Double Approach-Avoidance. This occurs when there are two choices both of which have attractive and unattractive aspects.) What makes these conflicts a problem, in addition to not being able to have everything you want, is that they can be very stressful, especially for children.
